Jim Helgeson and his wife, Della, visited me at my home here in Arizona.  We had a wonderful time and it was great to renew our classmate friendship.

Thanks for your birthday greeting.  I suppose 65 is a milestone, though the best thing about it is that the alternative isn't very appealing!  We are all reaching it together, so there is a support group.

My life in DC is quiet and OK.  The summer is too hot and humid for a SoCal type.  The long cold winter and very rainy spring were much nicer, though local people complained about them.  The countryside is nicer in the summer, however, and I have had a few nice trips out in the past month.  Everything is so close...Pennsylvania and West Virginia are both closer than Santa Barbara is from BP, and both are different from Virginia, which is right across the river.  I enjoy the historic places, and am finally getting a sense of American history.  I must have slept through those classes...I know so little about it!

I'm getting out again -- had some surgery, and we don't recover as fast as we used to -- and will be back at full strength soon.

Thanks again for the greeting.  Keep up the good work.

I have really been enjoying the e-mail I've been getting. You are doing a remarkable job on the web site.  I have enjoyed everything. Is there anyway I can get the names, city and e-mails of the people that are here in Washington?  Do you know what happened to Sara Evans?   Thanks again

I got together with Connie Eves a few weeks ago. We had such a good visit and it was really nice to see her again. We laughed about our fun old days. Also, I called Carol Chamberlin, as she is living here in Utah and she was so surprised to hear from me. I for one appreciate all the work you have done. Thanks again.

Milo J. Matijasevich

Milo J. Matijasevich, 65, passed away suddenly August 6, 2003 at the Cook County Hospital in Grand Marais, MN. He was born and raised in California and in 1968 moved, with his family to the Chicago area. He has been the General Fleet Manager for Al Piemonte Ford in Melrose Park, IL since 1971. In 1972, he and his wife Dixie bought their property on Clearwater Lake in Grand Marais, MN. Their cabin became this favorite place to be both summer and winter. He was a much loved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was also a wonderful friend to many people all across the country both personally and professionally. He will be greatly missed by all. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Lyndon, daughter Mila (Robin), son Mark (Sylvia); his two beloved grandsons, Joseph and Charles; his sister Rose Ann; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department, 468 Clearwater Rd., Grand Marais, MN 55604 would be very much appreciated. A get together in his memory will be held at Al Piemonte Ford, 2500 W. North Ave., Melrose Park, IL, Sunday. Aug. 17th at 3:00 pm.

This story is in response to the letter I sent all classmates regarding an important cancer test, C-125.  It illustrates an important concept of taking responsibility for one's own health:

"As for managing your own health care, I had a car accident in 1999 and injured my back.  This was a rear ender type accident that occurred while I was twisted trying to watch for oncoming traffic while stopped at a red light.  I went to see a highly recommended Orthopedic Surgeon.  He gave me some X-Rays and diagnosed it as Soft Tissue Damage, and gave me some pain pills, muscle relaxers and prescribed Physical Therapy.  To make a long story short, the pain continued to get worse and worse and my back began to bow further and further no matter how hard I tried to stand straight.  Finally after 6 months of pain, continuing deformity and numerous trips back to him I absolutely insisted that I get an MRI.  He resisted, but finally prescribed it.  The MRI revealed that I had 3 vertebrae fractured through, T8, T9 and T10.  Not only were they fractured, they showed considerable wear and bone dust in the area from rubbing against each other.  I obviously wouldn't let this man treat me any more and went to Stanford Medical Spine Center.  Their resident surgeons wouldn't even touch it until the head of the Spinal Center returned from Europe.  When he did and studied the pictures he advised me to enter the hospital immediately for surgery.  I was in the operating room for 8 1/2 hours and have Titanium Rods and Bars with all of the required hardware.  He straightened the area as much as he could, but I still have a considerable bow.  He told me that if I had had the proper treatment and a brace immediately (within a week or so) that I would have been to avoid the surgery and the bow in my spine.  While my story isn't as dramatic as some, it certainly adds to the message."

Thanks for sharing, Bob.  We wish you well.
